DIESEL DREAMS

An online alumnus profile published by the Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board details the diesel success story of Lindsay Huffman. Ever since she was a little girl, Huffman knew knew she wanted to be a diesel mechanic like her father. Tragically, he passed away when she was a senior in high school. Through her grief, she enlisted the help of a friend and continued to work on her senior project of rebuilding a Cummins 3.9-liter diesel engine, dedicating the project to her dad’s memory.

After graduation, Huffman turned to the Workforce Investment Act Adult Program for assistance. Through the program, she was assigned a caseworker who helped her develop an employment plan that offered tuition assistance. At Nicolet College and then Fox Valley Technical College in Wisconsin, Huffman worked hard and earned a spot on the dean’s list every semester. She worked summers with Fox Valley’s Girl Tech program, mentoring more than seventy young women interested in the field.

Huffman graduated with an associate degree with high honors as a diesel technician and only one month later attained a job working as a diesel mechanic for Bowen’s Bus Service in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Today, Huffman lives her childhood dream of working to maintain and repair huge engines, just like her father before her.
